A narrower, better job board

Fractional leadership is not freelance delivery.

Mandates over task lists

A credible fractional CTO, CIO, CISO, CFO, COO, CMO, CPO, CCO, CRO, or people leader is accountable for a business result and the decisions required to reach it. Strong postings define authority, constraints, stakeholders, and the first 90-day outcomes. Generic requests for “a bit of strategy” attract a generic applicant pool.

Economics in the open

Every approved opportunity includes a compensation range and period. Hourly, daily, monthly, and annual ranges are all supported, but hidden budgets are not. This helps executives compare the expected commitment with the mandate’s risk and makes early conversations materially more useful.

Direct, deliberate applications

The employer controls the application destination, so candidates can apply through the company’s existing ATS or a dedicated form. We do not resell candidate contact data. Employers that need a curated search can request a shortlist separately from the public posting.

Freshness is a feature

Posts expire after 45 days. That protects candidates from stale listings and keeps search engines from surfacing roles that are no longer open. Employers can close a filled mandate sooner; a new hiring need requires a new, reviewed post.

Before you apply

Read the operating contract hidden inside the job.

  2. 02

    Operating cadence

Look for expected days per month, leadership meetings, board exposure, time-zone overlap, and response expectations.

  3. 03

    Outcome horizon

A serious mandate states what changes in 30, 60, and 90 days and how the company will know the work is succeeding.

  4. 04

    Exit or expansion

Clarify whether success means hiring a permanent leader, stabilising a transition, or maintaining a durable fractional seat.

Frequently asked

Executive job-board answers.

What counts as a fractional executive job?

A fractional executive owns recurring leadership outcomes for more than one company or for a defined portion of the week. The mandate should include decision authority, measurable outcomes, and an expected operating cadence—not only project delivery.

Do executives pay to apply?

No. Candidates never pay to view or apply for a role, join the executive network, appear in search, or improve their ranking.

Why must every role show compensation?

Paid, reviewed roles on Fractional CTO Experts must show compensation. Clearly attributed feed listings link to the original source and may follow that source’s disclosure policy.

How long does a job stay live?

A reviewed job stays live for 45 days. It does not renew automatically, and expired roles leave the live jobs index.

Fractional Executive Jobs: Find and Assess the Right Role

By Fractional CTO Experts · Updated 2026-09-09

AI-assisted source and editorial checks; no independent expert review claimed

An executive exploring current leadership opportunities at a desk

How to use this fractional executive job board

Browse the current roles above, then narrow by executive function, engagement model and work arrangement. Read the individual listing before applying: a fractional CTO mandate, an interim operating role and a short advisory assignment can have very different responsibilities despite appearing in the same search. The useful question is whether the company needs decisions you are qualified and available to own.

This guide explains how to assess those opportunities, prepare a credible application and compare a proposed engagement with your existing commitments. It does not imply that every role discussed below is currently available. Listings change, filters can return no matches, and the original hiring organisation determines whether an opportunity remains open. The live board and each role's application destination are the places to check current details.

Candidates do not pay Fractional CTO Experts to view or apply for roles, create an executive profile, appear in search or improve their ranking. Paid employer listings and attributed feed listings have different origins. Read the source label, compensation disclosure and application instructions rather than assuming every card has passed the same review process. A listing is an invitation to investigate fit, not a guarantee of employment, payment or suitability.

What is a fractional executive job?

A fractional executive role gives an experienced leader recurring responsibility for a defined part of a company's leadership needs. The commitment may occupy part of the week or month, but the work should still have a clear mandate, sponsor and decision process. Fractional does not necessarily mean occasional advice, and it does not promise that several roles will fit together without conflict.

An interim appointment usually emphasises a temporary period of leadership: covering a vacancy, stabilising a function or guiding a transition. It may require substantial daily availability. An advisory engagement may focus on recommendations without the authority to manage a team. A project consultant may deliver a bounded assessment or implementation. These descriptions are practical distinctions to discuss with the company; the actual agreement and working relationship establish the role.

Do not use the title alone to decide whether to apply. A company asking for a CTO may need engineering management, product discovery, technical due diligence or a senior developer. Ask which decisions are currently delayed, who implements them and what the sponsor expects to change. If the answer is primarily a delivery backlog with no leadership authority, make that mismatch explicit before presenting yourself as the executive owner.

Engagement description What to clarify Evidence worth bringing
Fractional executive Recurring decisions, capacity and sponsor access Comparable leadership decisions and ongoing operating cadence
Interim executive Transition purpose, presence and exit conditions Stabilisation work and a documented handover
Advisor Questions to address and limits of authority Relevant judgment with clear recommendation boundaries
Project consultant Deliverables, dependencies and acceptance A similar bounded assignment with supported results
Contract-to-hire Initial scope and how a later appointment is decided Fit for both the immediate work and possible longer mandate

An executive comparing several role briefs at a desk

Start with the function where your experience is strongest. A CTO search should connect to technology strategy, engineering leadership and business decisions involving technical constraints. A CIO role may emphasise internal technology and information operations; a CISO mandate may focus on security leadership. The boundaries vary by organisation, so use these labels to begin a conversation rather than assume a universal reporting structure.

Finance, operations, marketing, revenue, people and product appointments also deserve separate evidence. A successful technology transformation does not automatically establish the ability to own a finance function. Equally, a senior product leader may have relevant cross-functional experience without having held a CTO title. Describe the responsibilities you actually carried and let the hiring team assess their relevance. Inflating the title makes later diligence harder.

Use adjacent roles selectively when the operating problem fits. Someone experienced in product and engineering leadership might consider a CPTO mandate, while a technical delivery leader might be better aligned with a head-of-engineering role. Read the CTO and VP of engineering comparison when the distinction is unclear. A narrower search with defensible evidence can be more useful than applications to every executive label.

Industry is another filter, not a substitute for examining the business. A software company, a professional services firm and a manufacturer may all need technology leadership while facing different delivery environments. State which constraints you have encountered directly and which would require specialist support. Avoid turning a short exposure to a sector into a claim of deep regulatory or operational expertise.

Read the mandate before judging the headline rate

A strong role brief explains the business trigger, the sponsor, the initial outcomes and the resources available. Look for the decisions the company wants the executive to make or recommend, the people who hold final approval and the team that will carry out agreed changes. An attractive title attached to an undefined rescue mission can consume far more time than the advertised commitment suggests.

Translate broad phrases into questions. “Scale engineering” could mean recruiting managers, improving release reliability, reducing coordination delays or replacing a fragile architecture. “Build an AI strategy” might mean evaluating one workflow rather than launching a company-wide programme. Ask the sponsor for a concrete example of the problem and the evidence that would show an improvement. This helps both sides avoid agreeing to incompatible expectations.

Separate outcomes you influence from dependencies you do not control. You might own a risk assessment and a prioritised recommendation while the board owns funding and a vendor owns implementation timing. An application can explain how you would establish those boundaries without promising a business result before access to the evidence. For a role-brief framework, see the CTO job description template.

Treat missing information as a discussion item, not automatic proof that a company is unsuitable. Early-stage businesses may still be defining the mandate. However, do not silently fill the gaps with assumptions and then price the work as though scope were agreed. Record the open questions and explain which ones must be resolved before either side can make a responsible commitment.

Compare hours, cadence and real availability

An allocation such as two days a week describes capacity only if both sides agree what those days include. Establish meeting windows, preparation, written decisions, team support, travel and response expectations. A role requiring an answer every afternoon can constrain a portfolio differently from an assignment with two predictable working days, even if the stated total hours are similar.

Consider this hypothetical planning example, not a recommended workload. An executive reserves 32 working hours in a particular week. Existing client work accounts for 18 hours, business administration takes four and an explicit contingency reserve takes three. That leaves seven unallocated hours. A new opportunity requiring six delivery hours plus two additional preparation hours needs eight, so the plan is short by one hour before any unexpected demand.

The categories in that calculation are deliberately non-overlapping. If preparation were already included in the six hours, adding it again would overstate the requirement. If an existing client's meeting moved, the apparent spare hours might still fail to overlap with the new company's required window. Capacity is therefore both a total and a calendar constraint. Reconcile the assumptions before offering a start date.

Ask how urgent work is handled and what happens when the agreed allocation is exceeded. Discuss the path for reprioritisation, additional capacity or a revised mandate. Do not imply continuous availability simply because you are willing to answer an occasional message. A credible response can include a clear limit and an escalation contact; that is more useful than a broad promise the organisation cannot rely on.

A fractional leader checking meeting windows against a weekly calendar

Evaluate remote and location requirements explicitly

Remote can mean working anywhere, working within a specified region, or working away from the office while remaining available for visits. Read the work-model label and ask about eligible locations, required overlap and travel. A remote listing is not itself confirmation that the organisation can engage a person in every country. Resolve location and contracting questions with the hiring organisation and appropriate advisers before accepting.

Use named time zones and actual dates when agreeing recurring meetings. “Morning overlap” means different things to participants in different regions, and seasonal clock changes can alter the relationship between their calendars. Confirm the meeting in both participants' local calendars, including weeks around changes. If the role involves several teams, identify which overlap is essential and which communication can happen asynchronously.

Travel expectations deserve the same specificity. Ask how often visits are expected, how much notice is usual, who approves expenses and whether travel time occupies the agreed allocation. An occasional strategy session and a regular multi-day visit create different practical commitments. Do not treat travel as free capacity simply because the main work is remote, or claim local presence when you would need to travel.

If the board has no matching remote role today, change one filter at a time and check the underlying requirement. Broadening the search may reveal adjacent opportunities, but it does not remove a company's stated location constraint. You can also maintain an accurate executive profile so that your capabilities and availability are understandable when an appropriate mandate arises. A profile does not guarantee introductions.

Compare compensation on a consistent basis

Identify the currency, period and scope behind every quoted amount. An hourly figure, a day rate and a monthly retainer cannot be compared responsibly without knowing the included time, response expectations and expenses. Separate stated compensation from an estimate published by a third-party source. When a feed listing does not disclose the terms, follow the original application destination and ask the company directly.

Here is a second hypothetical example. Offer A is a monthly retainer of 6,000 units of the same currency for 24 included hours. Offer B is 7,200 for 36 included hours. Dividing those amounts gives 250 and 200 per included hour respectively. Offer B has a larger monthly amount but a lower simple hourly equivalent. Neither calculation establishes which opportunity is better.

Those ratios exclude additional work, expenses, benefits, unpaid business time and any differences in responsibility. They also assume that the included hours are comparable and that the quoted amounts use the same currency. Use the calculation to expose questions, not to convert a retainer into an employment salary or claim a market benchmark. Compare the actual terms and take relevant professional advice on the agreement.

Comparison field Record for each opportunity Why the missing detail matters
Amount and period Currency, range and payment basis A monthly amount is not an hourly rate
Included work Delivery, meetings and preparation Unstated work changes the effective allocation
Extra capacity Approval and pricing process Urgent requests can expand the mandate
Expenses Travel and other approved costs The headline amount may exclude them
Duration and review Initial term and review points A proposed extension is not committed work
Evidence status Employer disclosure or source estimate An estimate is not an agreed offer

Prepare an application around relevant evidence

Build a concise account of why this particular mandate fits your experience. Begin with the company's stated problem, then describe one or two relevant decisions you have owned, the context and the evidence supporting the result. Keep actual titles, dates and responsibilities accurate. A long inventory of tools or familiar executive adjectives is less helpful when the reader needs to judge a specific leadership risk.

Distinguish your personal contribution from the wider team's work. If an organisation improved delivery performance during your tenure, explain the intervention you led and the limits of the comparison. Use numbers only when you can define the measure, period and source and have permission to share them. Qualitative evidence of a sound decision is preferable to an invented improvement percentage. The CTO resume guide includes an editable starter.

Give useful availability information without exposing private client details. State the capacity and overlap you can currently offer, any relevant start-date constraints and the engagement models you will consider. If you are building a portfolio, explain how you organise commitments and handle conflicts. Do not promise that a current client will reduce its needs merely because a new opportunity looks attractive.

Follow the listing's application instructions. An imported role may direct you to an external hiring system; submitting a network profile is not necessarily an application to that employer. Keep a private record of the source URL, date, submitted material and next step. Before following up, check whether the listing remains open and whether the organisation has given a preferred contact method or timeline.

A candidate preparing a focused application from permitted career evidence

Use the interview to test the working relationship

Ask the sponsor what happens when a recommendation conflicts with a current priority. Who decides, what evidence do they expect and how will the decision be recorded? This exposes the practical authority behind the role. You can discuss a comparable situation from your experience while protecting confidential information and acknowledging where the new company's circumstances may differ.

Explore access and implementation capacity. A leader cannot produce a reliable assessment without appropriate information, and an agreed roadmap needs people with time to act on it. Ask which team members would participate, which records are available and what dependencies are already known. Offer a sensible way to establish the baseline instead of claiming you can diagnose the organisation from a brief introductory call.

Discuss the first review and eventual handover. An initial mandate might conclude with a decision record, an agreed operating cadence or a transition to a permanent leader. Clarify how both sides will assess progress and what would justify continuing, changing or ending the engagement. These are working questions to resolve together, not a universal promise that every assignment should follow an identical 90-day plan.

Check the source and protect your information

The US Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers advertise through the same channels as legitimate employers and may seek money or personal information. Its job-scam guidance advises against paying for the promise of a job and warns about supposed employer cheques that require sending money onward. A familiar logo or a listing on a known site is not enough to establish legitimacy.

Independently confirm the organisation and contact route before sharing sensitive documents. Look at the application destination and question unexplained changes to a different communication channel. Our board's candidate-free model means you should not be asked to buy a ranking improvement or pay us to submit an application. An attributed external listing remains subject to its own source and employer checks.

Keep references and work samples proportionate to the stage of the conversation. Ask permission before sharing another person's contact details, and remove confidential client information from examples. If the employer wants an assessment task, clarify its purpose, expected effort, permitted data and how the output will be used. Do not use a live client's private materials to demonstrate suitability for a different organisation.

An executive verifying an employer's identity before sharing application documents

Make a deliberate application and acceptance decision

After the conversation, write a short decision note for yourself. Record the mandate, sponsor, available capacity, compensation basis, dependencies and unanswered questions. Separate confirmed facts from promising possibilities. A company that may raise funding or expand a role later is describing a potential future; base your current decision on the work and terms that are actually available.

Use that note to choose the next action: apply with a focused evidence summary, request clarification, continue diligence or decline politely. If there are no suitable roles, the productive response may be to improve your evidence and wait for a better fit. Applying indiscriminately does not create capacity, relevant experience or a viable mandate, and no job board can guarantee a steady supply of appropriate opportunities.

Return to the live listings above when you are ready to search. For technology-specific positioning, the fractional CTO career guide explains how to assess readiness and build a credible offer. Use the role brief, application and interview as parts of one process: establish what the company needs, show relevant evidence and agree a working arrangement both sides can sustain.

Questions about this guide

Where can I find fractional executive jobs?

Use the live job board above and filter by role, engagement model and work arrangement. Check each listing’s source, current availability and application destination. A network profile is not automatically an application to an external employer, and a board cannot guarantee suitable opportunities.

Are fractional CTO jobs always remote?

No. Read each listing’s work-model and location requirements. Remote may mean worldwide, region-limited or a combination of remote work and visits. Confirm eligible locations, dated time-zone overlap and travel expectations with the hiring organisation.

How many fractional executive jobs can I take at once?

There is no universal safe number. Compare all delivery, preparation, meeting, administrative and contingency commitments with actual available hours and required calendar windows. Resolve overlapping responsibilities and conflicts before accepting another mandate.

What is the difference between fractional and interim executive work?

Fractional work usually describes recurring leadership responsibility within an agreed portion of available capacity. Interim work usually describes leadership for a temporary transition or vacancy and can require substantial daily presence. Clarify the actual scope, authority and availability rather than relying on the title.

How do I compare compensation between fractional roles?

Record the currency, payment period, included work, expenses, extra-capacity process and duration. A simple hourly equivalent can expose differences in a retainer, but it is not a salary conversion or market benchmark. Distinguish employer-disclosed terms from third-party estimates.

What should I include in a fractional executive application?

Connect the employer’s problem to relevant decisions you have owned and evidence you can legitimately share. Keep titles, dates, personal contributions and availability accurate. Follow the listing’s application instructions and clarify missing scope or compensation details before committing.
